Cruel Mother Jailed For Three Months - Pushed Boy's Hand In Fire

CRUEL MOTHER JAILED FOR THREE MONTHS -PUSHED BOY'S HAND IN FIRE Georgetown, Friday, January 14, 1938
Princess Beckles was sentenced to three months' imprisonment without the option of a fine, by Mr. Magistrate Donald Edward Jackson, at the Vigilance Police Court yesterday, Thursday January 13.
She was arrainged on a charge brought against her by Sgt. 2126 Mentore for having assaulted her 2-year-old son, Hector Sancho, so as to cause him actual bodily harm.

Pushed Hand In Fire
County Inspector T. W. Whittingham, who prosecuted for the Police stating that Sancho, in the absence of his mother from the kitchen of their home, was alleged to have stolen a piece of stewed pork. Beckles caught him in the act and she held his right hand and pushed it in the fireside which was then lighted, resulting in the boy's hand being severely burnt. Despite the boy's sufferings, the mother made no effort whatever to allow the boy medical attendance.

Hand Not Yet Healed.
On December 6, 1937, two months after, the brutal act, and during which period of time the boy's hand became worse she took him to Dr. James  Edwin Rampersaud Ramdeholl, who recommended that the boy be taken immediately to the Public Hospital, Georgetown.
Sancho remained in the institution until January 11. In the meanwhile he had to undergo an operation. The boy's hand was not yet healed. The index finger being unable to be straightened.
Beckles was defended by Mr. J. L. Bobb, Solicitor.
